WE SUPPORT THE APPROVAL OF YOUR APPLIANCES WITH CERTIFIED COMPONENTS

When developing and manufacturing our products, we adhere to internationally recognised standards and the requirements of certification bodies both in Germany and abroad. Certification of a product is often the first step towards gaining access to certain markets. Many of our products are therefore already certified, or certification is obtained at the customer’s request.

We therefore take the regulatory compliance of our products into account right from the development or modification stage. The selection of suitable materials and design in accordance with standards are therefore of great importance.

Below is a selection of frequently requested certifications:

KTW-BWGL / UBA Compliance: Hygiene

The KTW-BWGL is the new assessment framework for plastics and other organic materials that come into contact with drinking water. It was published by the Federal Environment Agency in 2019 and came into force on 21 March 2021. Manufacturers and operators of drinking water systems must ensure that only organic materials that comply with the requirements of the KTW-BWGL are used for new installations or maintenance work.

The KTW-BWGL thus replaces the previously non-binding KTW guidelines, and the previous certificates are no longer valid.

NSF -National Sanitation Foundation

The NSF approvals are divided into different areas. What is important to us is...

  • NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 - "Drinking Water System Components - Health Effects"
for products in drinking water systems.
  • NSF/ANSI 169 - "Special Purpose Food Equipment and Devices"
This standard specifies minimum requirements for the materials, design, manufacture, construction and performance of specialised equipment and apparatus used in the food industry with regard to hygiene and food safety, insofar as these are not covered by other specific standards.

This test checks whether the materials and components in the part of the product that comes into contact with food release any harmful substances into the water.

VDE - Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies

The VDE generally certifies valves in accordance with EN 60730. In addition to the VDE mark, the ENEC mark is also awarded as a certification mark, which is generally valid throughout Europe.
In addition to functionality, the electrical safety of the products is also tested

ACS - Attestation de Conformité Sanitaire

This certificate is a hygienic testing of wetted materials and is mandatory in France.

Without ACS approval for materials or other components used in the drinking water sector, this market remains off-limits.

UL - Underwriters Laboratories
Through UL, products are tested for functionality and electrical safety, similar to VDE certification. Where possible, approval is granted for the entire North American market, i.e. the USA and Canada. The UL 429 standard and the Canadian CSA C22.2 No. 139 standard are the main standards relevant to us in this market.

WRAS - Water Regulation Advisory Scheme
Anyone wishing to supply plumbing components for drinking water applications to the UK market must obtain WRAS approval.
In addition to functionality, materials must also undergo a hygiene assessment in accordance with BS 6920.

EU-DWD approval: new requirements

From 1 January 2027, new requirements under the EU Drinking Water Directive (EU-DWD) will apply to new products across Europe. These relate in particular to materials, products, certification and labelling.

In future, new products will require an EU certificate bearing a standardised EU label, meaning they can be used throughout Europe. National regulations – such as the German Drinking Water Ordinance or stricter limit values (e.g. for lead from 2028) – will continue to apply in addition.

Further drinking water approvals

Of course, there are other approvals under the Drinking Water Ordinance, that are relevant for market entry – both now and in the future.

These include, for example, SVGW approval for Switzerland, as well as EU-DWD approval for Europe-wide applications.
